Charles Drury Edward Fortnum (1820-1899) was one of the most generous benefactors to the Ashmolean Museum. This portrait of him was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1893. It shows him wearing the gown of a Doctor of Civil Law at Oxford, a degree he was awarded in 1889.
